Why Was Giannone Important For The "Age of Reason"?
Pietro Giannone was one of the main characters of the Italian Enlightenment. He was the first person to deal with the problem between the Roman Catholic Church and the state which consequently raised a lifelong conflict between him and the church. Giannone wanted the monarch to have more power over the Pope both politically and religiously. Also, Giannone always asked for the abolishment of privileges that the clergy's had and the confiscation of their properties. Many Italian historians, such as Giuseppe Giarrizzo, said that he was responsible for modernizing the society of the past. Giannone was part of the Neapolitan philosophical law movement which basically consisted in the autonomy of a person and that the state shouldn't have any interference with the church. Also, Giannone bluntly blamed the Catholic's Church's interference for the maladministration of the kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Finally, we can all agree that Pietro Giannone played an important role in the Italian Enlightenment. |
